A steam room turns your bathroom into somewhere you go to unwind, not just to get ready.
Here's what steam can bring to your daily routine, the different ways to include it in your home, and the details that make a steam room a pleasure to use for years.
A spa day is a treat. A steam room at home becomes part of your week.
It’s there first thing, after a run or at the end of a long day, with no booking, no travelling and no sharing.
And because it lives inside your bathroom, it changes how the whole room feels.
Your bathroom becomes a private retreat, the one room in the house that’s entirely about you.
Warm steam, soft light and a few minutes away from a screen give your mind a rare chance to slow down.
For many people, it becomes the calmest part of the day.
Moist heat helps tired muscles relax, and research suggests it can ease the soreness that follows exercise.
It’s a natural fit after a run, a round of golf or a long day on your feet.
In warm, humid air, the small blood vessels near your skin widen and blood flow increases, which is why you step out feeling warm through.
Warm, humid air can make your nose and chest feel clearer, a welcome change when central heating leaves the air at home feeling dry.
Steam warms and hydrates the outer layer of your skin. Finish with a cool rinse and a moisturiser, and your skin feels soft and refreshed.
Warmth in the evening, followed by the gentle cooling that comes after, helps your body wind down.
Studies on warm baths before bed show people tend to fall asleep a little faster, and an evening steam session is likely to work in a similar way.
The simplest way to add steam. With the right insulation, a fully sealed enclosure and a compact steam generator, your shower becomes a hammam in the space you already have. Shower in the morning, steam in the evening.
A space designed purely for steam, with built-in seating, its own lighting and room to stretch out. It can be shaped around a large en-suite, an alcove or a room you’re not making the most of.
Steam paired with a sauna, infrared or UV in one space, designed around how you like to recover. Each works differently, so many of our clients combine them.
Effe is the Italian specialist in home steam and sauna, and the steam technology we design around.
A few details make a real difference to how your steam room feels every day.
Steam naturally rises, which in a traditional hammam leaves the floor cool and the ceiling hot.
Effe’s Power Steam Function circulates the steam so the warmth feels the same wherever you sit, and evenly timed heating keeps the steam dense and consistent.
Effe generators rinse and manage their own water, reducing limescale and protecting the boiler with no routine maintenance from you.
That matters in hard-water areas like Surrey and South West London.
Start your steam room from your phone using the Effe app, so it’s warm when you walk in.
Built-in Bluetooth means your music comes in with you.
Effe generators run on water pressures from 0.2 to 10 bar, so they suit most homes, including older properties with lower pressure.
External generators sit hidden out of sight for larger rooms; compact internal models suit steam showers.
If the door is left open for a while, the steam pauses automatically.
Steam reaches every corner of a room, which makes it the most demanding environment in any home.
These are the details we plan from the very first drawing.
A steam room is more than a shower with a door and a sloped ceiling.
The walls, floor and ceiling need to be properly insulated, so the warmth stays in the room rather than escaping into the structure around it.
In a well-insulated room, the steam generator reaches temperature quickly, then works gently to hold it.
Without that insulation, heat is lost into the walls, the generator runs at full power for long periods and the room struggles to get warm.
You wait longer, use more energy and enjoy a weaker steam. That’s why steam is planned from the very start of the design.
Insulation, waterproofing, ventilation and the size and position of the generator are all decided together, so your steam room performs with ease for years.
If you’ve been imagining a private steam retreat, a consultation at our Long Ditton showroom is the natural first step.
Less than you might think. A steam shower works within a shower footprint, as long as it can be fully enclosed and insulated. A dedicated steam room needs space for seating and a generator, which can sit hidden nearby.
It comes down to the heat you enjoy. Steam is gentle and moist; a sauna is intense and dry at around 70 to 100°C. Many people choose both as part of a wellness suite.
Very little. Let the room ventilate after use and wipe down surfaces now and then. Effe generators descale themselves automatically.
Usually, yes. It’s planned into the design along with the water supply and drainage, so everything is in place before the room is finished.
